Are you a satisficer or a maximiser?

Are you content to make the most of what comes your way? Or ……

Do you like to seek out the very best opportunity, weigh up all your choices and then make a decision?

In other words are you a satisficer or a maximiser?

Here’s a question to help find out.

If you were in the car listening to the radio would you….

A) flick through every station to find the best song or

B) Stop once you came to the first song that sounded fun?

If you answered A it is likely you are more of a maximiser,

If you answered B, you are a satisficer.

Now at first glance you might think the maximisers would have the edge in life.

It would seem sensible to try to make the absolute best choice every time, right?

Surely this would lead to a life that is the most fulfilling and happy.

But paradoxically, the science shows the opposite.

Maximisers tend to score lower on scales of happiness, self-esteem, optimism and life satisfaction.

Attempting to maximise your pleasure and satisfaction actually ends up costing you happiness.

In that search for perfection, time, energy, focus and joy get lost.

And the possibility of second-guessing, regret and discontent rise.

Yet so many of us do it.

It is hard not to.

Especially when we live in a culture that assumes more choices are better than fewer.

A culture where it so easy to fall into a constant comparison trap.

So what to do if you are one of the many maximisers out there?

Here are three tips to help you out

  1. Know your baseline criteria for success.Whether you are choosing toothpaste or buying a new house, what are the things you can’t live without?
  2. Choose the first option that meets those criteria and then STOP.
  3. Once you have made your decision focus on making the most of it. There is no point thinking about what might have been, enjoy what you have.

For the maximisers reading this, just thinking about these suggestions probably make squirm with discomfort.

But give it a try.

Imagine the time and energy you would free up.

Imagine being content with what you have.

Such a great way to live.
